I Thought Building a House Was Just Cement and Bricks.

I had no idea that electrical accessories would take up such a big part of my budget and my attention.

When I decided to build my own house, I thought I understood the process. You buy cement, bricks, steel, and sand. That is construction and building materials, right? That is what I thought. Then my contractor handed me a list of things I had never heard of. Switch plates, sockets, junction boxes, conduit pipes, wire connectors, circuit breakers, distribution boards. He said these are called electrical accessories. I had no idea that electrical accessories would take up such a big part of my budget and my attention.

Why Electrical Accessories Are Not Accessories at All

The word accessories makes them sound optional. They are not optional. Without electrical accessories, you cannot use any fan, light, or socket in your house. These are the backbone of your home's electrical system. And here is the thing. Good electrical accessories cost more, but they last for twenty years. Cheap ones start yellowing, cracking, and failing within two years.

I made the mistake of buying cheap switch plates and sockets from a roadside shop. Within eight months, three switches had become loose. One socket had stopped working. Another socket had started sparking when I plugged in the iron. I had to replace everything. That cost me more than if I had bought good quality from the start.

How to Choose Construction and Building Materials Wisely

For general construction and building materials like cement and steel, I learned to never compromise. I bought only from reputable dealers. I checked the manufacturing dates. I kept samples of each batch. But for electrical accessories, I learned something different. You do not need the most expensive brand, but you should avoid the cheapest. There is a middle range of electrical accessories that are affordable and reliable. They are not fancy, but they work for years without issues.

I asked my electrician to recommend three brands of electrical accessories that he had installed in many houses and had rarely seen complaints. He gave me three names. I bought one of them. The price was about thirty percent higher than the cheapest brand, but fifty percent lower than the most expensive luxury brand. That was the sweet spot.

My Advice for Other First Time Builders

Do not separate construction and building materials from electrical accessories in your mind. Plan both together. The placement of sockets and switches affects where you put furniture. The quality of wire and conduit affects how safe your house is. The type of distribution board affects how easily you can add new circuits later.

Create a list of all electrical accessories you need before you start construction. Include everything. Switch plates, sockets with and without switches, bell pushes, TV sockets, phone sockets, junction boxes, conduit pipes, and the main distribution board. Then go to a proper electrical shop, not a general hardware store. Ask for a quotation for the whole list from one brand. This will give you a realistic budget. I did not do this, and I ran out of money twice. Learn from my mistakes. Construction and building materials are important, but so are the small things that make your house livable. Electrical accessories are small in size but huge in importance.
